The "Constituent Assembly of a Possible Brazil" Exhibition is the result of the Linha de Cor (Color Line) Research, a partnership between the PPGD PUC-Rio and NIREMA, Prof. Ana Flávia Magalhães Pinto's team (History, UnB), and NGONGO filmes.
Based on the research findings, a public call was launched inviting Black artists to imagine a constituent assembly on May 14, 1888, involving the majority of the Brazilian population, their knowledge, and political practices in shaping a post-slavery nation.
Eighteen artists were selected, curated by writer and screenwriter Mariana Luiza, professors Ana Flávia Magalhães and Thula Pires, and archivist Yago Lima. The works that made up the exhibition employed different media, such as paintings, installations, collages, drawings, audiovisual productions, sculptures, and photographs. Over six hundred public school students visited the exhibition. Throughout its run, visitors had the presence of bilingual educator Eduardo Corrêa, who provided guidance in both Portuguese and Libras (Brazilian Sign Language). According to the Centro Cultural dos Correios, which hosted the exhibition, over twenty thousand people visited.
Originally scheduled to run from October 9 to November 30, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, the exhibition’s popular success led to its extension until January 4, 2025, in the city, as well as its subsequent expansion to Brasília-DF.
Starting on August 5, the exhibition will open at the National Council of Justice (CNJ) in Brasília/DF and will remain open to the public until September 26, 2025. In addition to the original works shown in Rio de Janeiro, the exhibition will display new pieces, including a fundamental work by the Brazilian intellectual, activist, and artist Abdias Nascimento.
