Climate Litigation Platform

Among the impactful initiatives of the PPGD, specifically in developing databases with social, economic, cultural, and legal impact, is the creation of the Climate Litigation Platform. The project is coordinated by Prof. Danielle Moreira and includes the participation of one master's alumna, three doctoral students, and one master's student—all from the PPGD at PUC-Rio—as well as three current undergraduate students and one undergraduate alumna from PUC-Rio.

The Climate Litigation Platform is a database that compiles information on climate litigation in Brazilian courts and is available at https://juma.jur.puc-rio.br/base-dados-litigancia-climatica-no-brasil. The information collected, classified, and systematized on this platform serves as the main input for periodic analyses of the profile and trends of climate litigation in Brazil. These elements also contribute to producing applied knowledge to improve and implement domestic climate policies, thereby enhancing the legal debate for the implementation of preventive, mitigating, compensatory, and/or reparatory measures for socio-environmental impacts and damages related to climate change.

The work aligns with the research area Constitutional Transformations and Constitutional Thought, with a particular focus on the objective of reflecting on and analyzing the transformations in Brazilian Environmental Law as a result of the environmental and climate emergency. The information produced to populate the Platform is translated into English and sent for publication in the global climate litigation database maintained by the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University (http://climatecasechart.com/), an institution with which JUMA/PUC-Rio has an established cooperation agreement.
